We have received many excellent projects from students and we provided feedback to those students accordingly. I'd like to share with you the comments that I made to one student because they don't divulge the name of either the student or the company, yet they highlight some key aspects of the project: "You did a very comprehensive job in thinking through your business unit, its capabilities, and how they relate to the growth opportunity that you are assessing. It's easy to fall into the trap of "filling out forms" instead of "thinking things through" given the methodology that we are exposing students to in this course. But you have obviously "thought things through" very well and then "filled out the forms." The "winner's profile" results in what I call a "gap analysis"...namely, what gaps in current performance or capabilities need to be resolved in order to be successful in the future. In that regard, I think your did an exceptional job of linking those "gaps" to the "strategic issues" section dealing with required expertise and the "internal development" section under "strategies." And I especially appreciated your frank assessment on Page. 4.5 under "downside exposure" when you stated, "No, but we can avoid poor design and sloppy execution." While this course IS about strategy, operational excellence is still a necessary prerequisite to success. Yet operational excellence needs to be clearly linked to and driven by strategy. In that regard, I think you did a great job of making that connection in this project." I hope you find the above comments useful in thinking about the objectives of and benefits from the strategic planning project. Best regards, Rudy Herrmann
